Artist Biography
Joel Pulliam is a singer, songwriter, producer, and creative whose sound spans multiple musical styles marked by depth, storytelling, transparency, and vulnerability. His sound carries emotional weight and fluidity, creating music that feels deeply personal while remaining open to interpretation and inviting listeners to feel their way through each song. Influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince, The Beatles, Commissioned, Fred Hammond, and The Winans, Joel blends generations of musical excellence with a perspective all his own, creating music that honors the artistry that came before him while remaining unmistakably Joel. His music doesn’t follow trends. It is an honest expression of emotion and his unique voice.
Born in Detroit, Joel spent his early years in Michigan before moving with his family to South Carolina. Detroit's rich musical legacy—the unmistakable mark of a city that helped shape the sound of generations—left an early impression, helping Joel develop a deep appreciation for great songwriting and timeless musicianship that would become a lifelong connection to music. In South Carolina, that passion continued to grow as he developed his musical voice and began defining his own sound. Music was never just an interest; it was in his blood. For Joel, making music was inevitable.
Growing up in a household where music was an integral part of family life, Joel developed a natural love for sound. His appreciation for music extends beyond listening; it reflects his deep understanding of where it’s been, who shaped it, and how it’s evolved. That love for music history, along with his respect for those who came before him, shows up in everything he creates, adding a layer of nostalgia that grounds his sound while still leaving room for something fresh and entirely his own. A self-taught keyboardist and acoustic guitarist who learned to play entirely by ear in his father’s church, Joel was expressing himself through music long before he realized it was one of his greatest gifts. By the time he studied Music Theory in college, he had already developed a musical intuition shaped by years of sound engineering, leading worship, and spending hours studying the craft of music legends who knew how to move people—body, mind, and soul.
His songs reflect years of quiet refinement and an ear for musical nuances... the kind that make a track linger long after it ends. They deliver a refreshing blend of vulnerability and boldness, mixing sounds that tap into something timeless. Sounds that challenge the norm and speak to his evolution as an artist. His debut single "YOU" opens the door to his upcoming album ALL I WANTED TO SAY. It was the first song Joel completed that never got old to him, a return to where he needed to be creatively and emotionally. Every lyric serves as a reminder of the power of speaking what’s been left unsaid.
For Joel, the creative process is part of the magic. He never knows what idea will come next or where a song will take him, and that’s one of the things he loves most about creating.
Joel’s music is as unique and introspective as he is. He's someone who observes, reflects, analyzes, and expresses. He brings the same thoughtful intensity to his lyrics that he brings to the personal essays and cultural commentary he has shared through his writing and podcast. Whether he’s unpacking the complexities of emotional truth, justice, or purpose, Joel’s voice on the page and in the studio is one that urges reflection. His art speaks to the quiet, often unspoken truths many carry inside, bridging the space between emotion and insight. Through both mediums, he gives language to what so many have felt but couldn’t quite put to words. From music to writing to civic action, Joel’s voice rises from a place of purpose. It’s what led him to create The First and Fifteenth Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to elevating the civic voices of Black voters and underserved communities. For Joel, music and advocacy are cut from the same cloth; both are vehicles for truth, human connection, and lasting impact.
His work is raw, expansive, and deeply personal. It carries equal parts vulnerability and virtuosity. With every song, Joel Pulliam invites listeners into his creative world, one that is wide open, reflective, crafted with intention, and grounded in a belief that music has the power to heal, unite, and speak truth to silence. At the heart of Joel’s creative philosophy is a desire to create music that leaves an impression beyond the final note. He hopes listeners remember not only the song itself, but how it made them feel.
Musical Influences
Joel's musical foundation is shaped by artists who have each contributed to his understanding of creativity, storytelling, and musical excellence. Beyond their technical ability and artistic achievements, the qualities he admires most are their transparency and vulnerability: the willingness to create from a place of honesty and allow listeners to connect with something real. Joel draws inspiration from artists who pushed beyond boundaries, challenged expectations, took creative risks, and redefined what was possible in music.
From Stevie Wonder’s masterful musicianship, timeless songwriting, and ability to blend emotion, innovation, and social consciousness; to Michael Jackson’s creative precision, electrifying performances, and legacy as an artist who redefined what was possible in music and entertainment; to Prince's groundbreaking sound, command of multiple instruments, artistic independence, and commitment to creative control; to The Beatles’ innovative songwriting, creative evolution, and courage to take risks that changed the course of popular music; and to Commissioned, Fred Hammond, and The Winans’ sophisticated harmonies, unforgettable melodies, powerful vocal arrangements, and ability to bridge faith, emotion, and contemporary sounds, Joel has been shaped by artists who not only created exceptional music but left a lasting impact through their creative vision.
Together, these influences reflect his desire to honor the artists who paved the way while creating music with a voice that is uniquely his own.
